Heirloom Seeds & Gardening
All -
There are a lot of somewhat scattered threads/posts about heirloom seeds and gardening in here. How 'bout consolidating these into a sticky thread, mods? I certainly think it would be worth it........ There's a dusting of snow on the ground out here, and I'm unloading 4 yards of really great compost on the main garden, thinking about what I'm going to do with this year's garden. scyth |
Re: Heirloom Seeds & Gardening
Good idea, if you can find someone with the time to do it...
Most heirloom seeds would, I assume, be open-pollinated (non-hybryd) varieties? I was into this a few years back...I grew some heirloom corns, including Golden Bantam and Stowell's Evergreen...and I have to say I was disappinted with the quality and yields....in particular, the Golden Bantam did not breed true, despite being advertized as an open pollinated variety.........my choice in corn falls somewhere between the heirloom yellow strains and the super-sweet modern hybrids, which are too much like candy for my taste.....also, the modern hyrids appear to bruise too easily, whereas the older corns are much hardier.. I had better luck with heirloom tomatos, there are some really nice varieties out there, that have nice flavor and texture...also, bell peppers as well... Good idea for a consolidated thread.. |
